Scouts from 2nd Westmeath Athlone and 5th Westmeath, Killucan, brought plenty of noise and no chaos to Lecarrow in Roscommon last weekend when the two Troops met up for a weekend of activities in Rindoon and St.Johns Forest. The two Scout Troops are planning an Annual Camp together in Kent in UK in August, and decided on a skills weekend at the home of a sister Troop, 14th Roscommon, so the Scouts could all meet and get to know each other.
Forty five Scouts plus Leaders made extensive use of the heritage area of Rindoon for a night navigation exercise and outdoor cooking on the Friday night and Saturday morning, finding their way around just using compasses and maps. The night navigation exercise was particularly useful since it was a moonless night and planning was critical in building up the confidence of young people in their map and compass. The weekend included shelter and survival skills and axe safety in St.Johns Forest. All the work is progressing Scouts through the badge system developing their hill walking, camping, outdoor cooking and navigation skills.
The Two Scout Troops are planning to bring 64 Scouts and Leaders to an International Scout Jamboree in Kent, and are planning more weekends together in the meantime.
