Milltownpass scouts, 9th Westmeath troop, gathered at Lilliput, Lough Ennell on Monday last to celebrate a number of scouting events and achievements. The group of almost 100 Scouts including beavers from 6 years old, Cubs, Scouts and Scouters as well as newly appointment Group Leader Denis O’Neill, decorated the lake shore in the distinctive Navy Blue of Scouting Ireland.
While the group regularly have social occasions where all 3 groups would meet, this was a very special event. The Scouts cooked up a fine BBQ while the Beavers and Cubs part-took in orienteering activities. The group then began celebrations with a presentation to 5 children with a highly sought after award, an award never before presented to a scout in 9th Westmeath, The Chief Scout award. The five very hard working members were : Grace McQuaid, Mikey Henry, Eoghan Campbell, Evan Phelan , Karl Bourke.
Following this Beavers and Cubs were awarded badges for Adventure skills they took part in over the last few months, also two cubs, Emily Gorman and Ella Delamare received Special interest badges. There will be many colourfully decorated uniforms from Milltownpass next September!
The badge presentation was a warm up for a very important part of all troops events, The Investiture. 9th Westmeath, Milltownpass troop welcomed two new Leaders, Gary McGivney and Norman Weir. The group also invested two scouts Lisa O’Kelly and Roisin Lyster
The 9th Westmeath Milltownpass Scout Troop are a very proactive group who, like all scouters, work completely voluntarily, dedicating their time to the encouragement int the development of young people. They part take in many community events as part of the ethos of scouting and were rewarded in the Tyrrellspass St. Patrick’s Day Parade for their efforts with their float – Gulliver and the Little People by receiving The Best Non Commercial Float award. The group had a full family celebration at the lake to mark this and all their achievements throughout the year.
